Welcome to the home page of the Mount Vernon Independent School District Department of Special Services.

The Department of Special Services at MVISD is committed to serving the needs of students ages 3 through 21 with disabilities within the least restrictive environment. Our department services students through both Special Education and section 504. We provide a full continuum of instructional settings led by specially trained staff to support each child's access to the general education curriculum. MVISD is responsible for serving students with disabilities from the ages of 3-21.  If a child is blind or deaf, they may qualify for services from birth.  If you would like more information on developmental milestones for children, please see this

                  NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF 2012-2013 SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS

Special education records collected by Mount Vernon ISD related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement or provision of special education in the district are required by state and federal law to be retained for five years after special education services have ended for a student. When a student who receives special education services is no longer eligible for those services, graduates, completes his or her educational program at age 22, or moves from the district, special education services cease.

After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, though they may be useful to a parent or guardian or the former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance or other matters.

This notification is to inform parents, guardians and former students of Mount Vernon ISD’s intent to destroy the special education records of students who were no longer receiving special education services as of the end of the 2012-13 school year. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent, guardian or eligible adult student notifies the school district otherwise.

The parent, guardian or eligible adult student may request a copy of the records in writing or in person at the following address by Friday, December 21st:
