MVISD family,

I wanted to take a few minutes to share with you the decision of the school board last night to begin mandating masks for students in grades 5-12 and all staff members. Starting tomorrow, September 23, all staff members will be required to wear masks. This will follow the guidelines laid out by TEA back before school started. Students will be required to wear masks while at school when in hallways and common areas, during arrival and dismissal, and if riding a bus unless they are at least 6 feet away from others. Students will also be required to wear masks when in the classroom unless the teacher is able to space desks and students 6 feet apart. Parents, I am asking you to help us with this and have your students bring and wear a mask each day. We have been supplied by TEA with reusable and disposable masks for each student. If your student does not have a mask, one will be provided for them. Refusal of a student to wear a mask will not result in a discipline referral, although, if a student continually refuses to wear a mask, then they will be required to move to remote learning for the remainder of the grading period. This movement to remote learning will take place once the student has refused to wear a mask for 3 days.

All staff will also be required to wear masks when in all common areas and hallways. While a teacher is giving instruction and at least 6 feet away from students, then they will not be required to wear a mask at that time. Once they begin to move around the classroom and get within 6 feet of students, then they should have their mask on at that time.  Staff members, who are in their office by themselves would not have to wear a mask. If someone comes into their office and they are not able to social distance at least by 6 feet, then they would need to wear a mask.

Please understand that this is an effort to keep Mount Vernon ISD from having to quarantine non-sick staff or students who might have been exposed to a COVID positive individual. As of today, we have had to quarantine 278 students and 16 staff members in our first six weeks of school. Per the guidelines we have been given by TEA and CDC, if both the sick person and the ones who are around them are wearing masks, then we do not have to quarantine the non-sick person. By requiring masks, it is our attempt to keep as many staff and students at school for face to face instruction as we possibly can.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience with this process. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, jmccullough@mtvernonisd.net, or call me at (903) 537-9900.
